Day 38: Would You Like Some Sleet With Your Rain

Starting Point: Flint Mountain Shelter (308.8)
Ending Point: Sam's Gap (320.0)
Total miles: 11.2 miles
Steps: 32,119
Injuries: Back
Achievements: High Rock

Captain Blogger asked that we hostel at Sam's Gap instead of hiking all the way to Irwin.  Cold, wet, muddy and tired Sweeper and I agreed.

I took a hard fall yesterday and while I didn't feel hurt, I have discovered that I have a kink in my back.  Going in would allow the Sweeper, a physical therapist, an opportunity to look at it without an unnecessary amount of hiker stink.

That meant we were going to do 11 miles into Sam's Gap.  We had two tough climbs.  The first led to a waterfall.  It was worth the price of admission.  The second lead to a boulder.  Not worth the price of admission.

We reached the gap by 2 p.m. and were picked up.  I have showered and have clean laundry.  Captain Blogger has some injuries as well, so we're going to slack pack.

Instead of carrying my pack, we're going to day hike with a rented pack.  Tomorrow is a 13 mile day with a near 4000 foot climb, but I'll have a pack with some snacks and water.  That will allow me to get some miles in with less wear and tear on me.

The Sweeper did not notice anything unusual.  I may have strained a joint or ligament.  As I sit I can feel it.  It is minor and not anything that will cause me to end my hike prematurely.
